EIFE, G., MANSAGER, E., WITTE, K. H., (2021), Adlerian Depth Psychotherapy:
Intersubjective and Relational Elements, J. Individ. Psychol., 77(3): 286-304.

Traduzione italiana di Giansecondo Mazzoli

Summary – ADLERIAN DEPTH PSYCHOTHERAPY: INTERSUBJECTIVE AND RELATIONAL ELEMENTS.
The authors share the context of the depth-psychotherapeutic approach of Alfred Adler. Then, responding to the growth of interpersonal approaches in psychoanalytic and psychodynamic psychotherapy, the authors present vignettes of Adlerian psychotherapy to demonstrate its historical and companionable approach to intersubjectivity and relational elements in the larger world of psychotherapy. Publishing in an Adlerian journal rather than one of psychodynamic psychotherapy offers members of the North American Society of Adlerian Psychology a taste of Adler’s expanded potential in the therapeutic setting.

Summary – THE DEVELOPMENT OF ADLERIAN THOUGHT OVER THE PAST TWENTY YEARS:
SOME INTERNATIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS. A review of some recent and relevant contributions for
updating the theory and practice of the Individual Psychology is provided. First the debate between tradition
and change which took place during the 20th IAIP Congress is summarized, mainly considering Rainer
Schmidt and Bernard Shulman point of view. The problems concerning orthodoxy, and the consonances
or dissonances in nowadays development of Adler’s theories are subsequently discussed, particularly with
respect to the so called Post-Adlerian and Neo-Adlerian perspectives. Adlerian psychotherapies with a
humanistic, psychodynamic, or constructivist orientation are briefly outlined in a current definition, also
citing the Classical Adlerian Depth Psychotherapy, the Adlerian Psychodynamic Psychotherapy and the
Adlerian Psychotherapy as empirically informed treatments. The importance of the scientific research is
finally stressed in order to discuss and validate a number of concepts, such as Striving for Power and Social
Interest, intrapsychic and relational conflict, conscious and unconscious, cultural empathy, therapist’s emotional
response, vulnerability and personality organisation.

Summary – THE JELLINEK AND MURPHY’S PEDIATRIC SYNPTOM CHECKLIST (PSC) IN THE
ADLERIAN NETWORK MODEL. The questionnaire investigates the child’s daily life in different areas
of school, family and relationships with peers, identifying existing problems. The recognition of them in
several areas of investigation is indicative of a risk of psychosocial disorders for which the checklist is a
valuable psychopathological screening tool for the pediatrician and the educator, provides valuable material
to the researcher and, involving parents, reminds them of the important role they play in the therapeutic and
educational alliance. In fact, this tool can create and strengthen those connections and synergies that are
now more than ever necessary to optimize the many means of communication available.

Summary – OLD AND NEW CONDITIONS IN SEXUALITY: THE IMPACT OF COVID-19 IN INTIMATE
RELATIONSHIPS AND SEEKING OF AFFECTIVITY. Covid-19 had a severe impact onto individual
sexuality: the opportunities for relationships and encounters decreased and pre-existing fragilities emerged.
Scientific literature points out various critical issues about the sexual domain for heterosexual couples
and an increase in the gap of inequalities for LGBTQ minorities. Brief clinical samples are showed up to
demonstrate the creative issues and adaptive initiatives between patients. Others hight light the “neurotic”
attachment to the pandemic as an excuse to postpone challenges and openness towards relationships.
Finally, sexuality reveals the interest in bonds in a historical moment characterized by limits and impositions.
The use of technology during Covid points out the question about the “goodness” of the devices
currently available to cultivate our need for relationships, between virtual and real, as professionals and
individuals, about our openness to society, to start over and to heal pre-existing wounds that, in some cases,
the pandemic has made it more evident.

Summary – ELENA’S CASE STUDY: FROM THE SOCIAL WITHDRAWAL TO A WORK ALLIANCE.
The situation presented in this case study describes the clinical work done with an adolescent girl with high
functioning autistic syndrome. This condition resulted in a gradual social withdrawal which influenced the
initial engagement and the establishment of the Work Alliance. This paper comes from the need to have a
comparison with the trainers/instructors at the internship, but the primary need is to engage with the Adlerian
community on the theme of adolescent social withdrawal which is a much more common occurence
we see with generation than with adolescents in prior generations.
