Summary. In this article we describe different approaches to the study of the unconscious mental life. In particular, we underline psychoanalytic, cognitive, and psychophysiological theories and we try to apply these different methods to the study of dreams. Besides, we try to correlate oneiric life to the physical and mental illness and their treatment. We analyse dreams in a group of patients of the consultation-liaison psychiatric service that assumes a particular importance both in the anamnestic, diagnostic and in the treatment phase. Results and implications of our study will be exposed.
