Summary. Setting is linked to a technique that is at the same time included in an institutional public working contest. In this contribute the intent is especially to face the need to ask oneself about the goals of an addiction treatment in a widespread socialcultural context that today seems to be moving in reverse trend. The debate on addiction is now more complex, meeting with behavioral diseases concerning different objects and situations: food, sex, game, Internet….aspects of a fundamental neurotrasmitter system of our body: dopamine. The negative value added to psychoactive drugs addiction is the stigma and the moralistic view that continue to weigh on some diagnostic and therapeutic choices. Adlerian setting, trying to make possible the relation between what is reality and what is imagination for the patient, represent the way now, greater than ever, to face the complexity of our time.

Inferiority and compensation. Considerations on a fundamental symbol in western culture

Poster session presented at the XXIII S.I.P.I. National Congress – “The network of the compensatory functions in the Adlerian theory and practice”, Milan, 2012.

The full article is available for download in Italian only.

Summary. The considerations developed in this poster can be summarised as follows: firstly, the symbol of Christ on the cross, a religious symbol per se, is read using other keys to interpretation (psychodynamic, literary, sociological and philosophical) on an Adlerian basis; this highlights that the basic dynamics is always the inferiority/superiority dialectic. Secondly, the symbols “cross” and “crossing” – very rich in meaning and present in several cultures – are analysed; the definition of a genetic phenomenon as a crossing-over brings us back to Adler’s brilliant intuition of the psychological and biological world of human beings as based on an inferiority/compensation dynamics, as if these two forces were “crossing” for survival’s sake. Finally, this poster suggests a possible formalisation of the way in which compensation and inferiority operate, by drawing a xy Cartesian coordinate system on which normal and pathological psychological manifestations are placed.

Therapeutic network and services network. Giacomo's long clinic history: a bio-psycho-social-cultural project from acute state to rehabilitation

Paper presented at the XXIII S.I.P.I. National Congress – “The network of the compensatory functions in the Adlerian theory and practice”, Milan, 2012.

Summary. Through the ten-years clinical history of a young man afflicted with a serious disturb in the psychiatric area, the authors describe the various stages of the therapeutic project which is developed with a bio-psycho-social-cultural model. It goes through a long pathway that involves different therapeutic agencies articulated in a network of public, private and university services. The attention is focuses on making the “madeto-measure clothes” for the patient in a continuous effort by the therapists to catch the needs of the present, in addition to a continuous consideration on the possible developments. Particular attention was turned to the familiar and environmental contest through different cultures mediation from the work groups and from the various involved agencies.

For a development of the psychopathological-cultural comprehension of addiction (dependence) and for a basis of psychotherapeutic intervention

The full article will be available for download in Italian only, from December 2016

Summary. Addiction (for convenience we will also use the word “dependence” as a synonymous of addiction) is a pathological condition stemming from the interaction of different elements that constitute a
complexe system: any monocular or simplified vision is radically kept in check by the phenomenological  and clinical reality. Moreover, the border between pathology and non-pathology in the dependences, is  nuanced and floating and is effected by the changes of one of the most crucial and powerful vectors: the  environment. The type of substances, their symbolization, the representation of the problem as well as the  management of their psychophysical effects, the research of well-being, are strongly influenced by social  recognition and by myths and collective fictions. The culture of limit denial and the technological increase  in daily life, both incurred by financial purposes and both reinforcing collective great mania, make difficult
the recognition and the definition of the clinical problem. The therapist, in particular the psychotherapist,  can find him/herself in the condition of swinging between the loss of role and power and the drift to assume a role of fictional superiority: on one hand having to recognize him/herself outdated, on the other hand not being able to recognize the “prophetic” meaning of drug-addictive experiences. The therapy of dependence must be refunded in order to give it a meaning that can move among complication, complexity, in an open multidisciplinary system, in a relational and functional network, able to create changes in the meaningful references of the patient.

Xenofobic destructiveness: delirium of omnipotence or ruthless law of evolution?

Summary. The writing starts considering the recent dramatic facts of interethnic  fights in the world, comparing them with other events taken out of history and of myth. Postmodern  sociology asserts we are sons of those people who could survive and reproduce, affirming  themselves and their descendants. Competition doesn’t develop only among individuals but also  among organized societies. The attenuation of inhibiting control, caused by being in the group,  emphasizes aggressiveness driving it to its most violent manifestation.

Summary.  Among the anthropological foundations of societies, the Sacred provides the greatest epistemological contribution to the Orientation of Values, for the individuals and for the community too. From these assumptions, we can develop the topics of religion and religiousness and those of worship and culture. The Comparative Individual Psychology (C.I.P.) is the dynamic approach that allows us to understand the important contribution of Alfred Adler through the correspondence with Pastor Jahn; we can understand the difference between the “Idea of God” and the “Revelation of God”. The empathic understanding can be correctly used when a cultural identification, including the religious dimension, exixts. The complexity of these matters (in a period that is postmodern but also New Age) finds precise contexts in multiethnic, multicultural and multireligious contexts.

Language and explicative comprehension

Summary.  Shared, Explicative Comprehension may find its most suitable collocation in the Dynamic Psychology of Adler, with reference to some of its parameters. The most prominent among these is the Ontogenesis of Language, in its reference to pre-verbal phases of the age of development. The theoretical-methodological and clinical ambit is that of a model which consists of an interdisciplinary network, attentive to the relational aspects, and to interpersonal and intercultural perspectives. This orientation, utilizable in the psychotherapeutic interaction, emphasizes, in particular, the attitude of the therapist, through the medium of a (counter-)transference that is both conscious and intentional (enactment, disclosure, and so on). With reference to this we may draw attention to some techniques which would encourage an emotive meeting up with the transitional, pre-verbal area (earliest memories, the family constellation, dreams etc). The approach, both comprehending and explicative, encourages an empathic participation and an adequate sharing, tending towards the fostering of a therapeutic alliance within the contexts of a culturally-appropriate psychotherapy.

This work also studies the difficulties which can rise in an  intercultural  psychotherapy and the operative ways to overcome them. At last, two clinical cases show  how language is instrumental also from a symbolical point of view.
