Craving, pleasure and happiness: the chemical path to satisfaction

Paper presented at the XXIII S.I.P.I. National Congress – “The network of the compensatory functions in the Adlerian theory and practice”, Milan, 2012.

The full article is available for download in Italian only.

Summary. The basic misunderstanding that on an individual level supports the addicted behavior (the exchange “pleasure for happiness”) is nowadays widespread on a social level. The lack of “Social Interest” and the prevale of a view of life promoting consumism as the answer to the radical insignificance, converts psychoactive drugs in objects of consumption, ordinary possibilities to reach immediate pleasure. Desire becomes craving, yearning, without projects and creativeness. The possibility of happiness is exchanged for a limited pleasure reduced to the moment of use, in a basically depressive dimension, without transcendence and without hope. The core problem is given by the support that society and culture operate on addictive behavior and on the lack of critical ability. In this situation the “fight against drugs” seems a falsification made by institutions that are not able to think about their operations and about the present socialcultural complexity. The match between individual and social dynamics, with their different levels and meanings, creates a spiral of con-fusion that often represent the principal and preliminary therapeutic problem.

Amazement and identity in analysis

Paper presented at the XXIII S.I.P.I. National Congress – “The network of the compensatory functions in the Adlerian theory and practice”, Milan, 2012.

The full article is available for download in Italian only.

Summary. Caravaggio’s painting “La chiamata di Levi” is the spark that recalls the snapshot full of mystery and untold and unspoken truths that we find in the relationship between the analyst and his patient. Amazement is an experience of seeing-knowing-understanding, it is the unexpected in analysis that incorporates the subjectivity of the therapeutic relationship that makes the patient think to be intimately asked: me, truly? The amazement refers to one self: it is an action that reveals someone’s identity, it is a transformation, not a safe arrival, but an unpredictable place. In analytic therapy will not happen a fascination, but a link between what amazes and who is surprised, thus structuring an unrepeatable relationship to redefine the lifestyle.

Compensation and life-style

Summary. The Love of Our destiny and the neurosis. Life-style is the kind of particular complex relations leading to an unaware design that characterizes the structure of the Adlerian personality. Compensation is a fundamental mechanism in the personality organization and in each individual life style . This is an exquisitely adlerian concept, even if borrowed, added with great originality, by the thought of the “as if “ philosopher, VAHINGER .As according to Adler and other authors the human condition consists of a fragile and insecure nature, men have , in order to build their future, to use tools and instruments enabling them to overcame their real or supposed inferiorities either from a practical point of view or connected to the existence of the knowledge that allows human beings to understand the world. These essential instruments, i.e. the compensations, must have characteristics which are positive and useful to allow us to overcome practical and personal difficulties we come across in various life circumstances. Alternatively whenever the compensations, far from being positive tools, turn out to be inefficient to reach the desired aims with balance, life-style, carrying along an unsolved conflict, shows the marks of the discomfort and the disease. The author believes in the acceptance of love for our destiny as the solution to the overwhelming neurosis, which, instead of using hyper-compensatory ways ,is bound to lead us to failure. This acceptance can only unwind in a context of freedom and confidence, which means the psycho-sexual acceptance of the adult individual. The purpose and the end of the psychotherapy can’t be found outside this setting absolutely necessary and highly meaningful, that lies at the root of the choice between freedom and neurosis. This is a dilemma that must be solved only by following the process described above, which an individual can reach only in a context of freedom regained and of a destiny not only accepted but beloved.
